The Series Commander Course (SCC) is a 10 day course with the mission to train, educate, and introduce newly assigned company grade officers with the basic knowledge and skills to successfully perform the duties as a series officer.
The course is instructed by the Assistant Director of Drill Instructor School and consists of guided discussions, classes, close order drill, physical training, briefings, observation, case studies, and practical applications.
The preponderance of the course is spent covering the Recruit Training Order (RTO) and lessons learned through experiences and case studies. The information and training covered in the course is vital to successfully performing the duties of a series commander. The graduation from the course is a requirement by depot order.
To graduate from the course the student must demonstrate mastery of the following areas: RTO certification consisting of a 100 question multiple choice exam, SCC certification consisting of a 75 question short answer exam, sword manual evaluation, consisting of execution of a drill card with the Mameluke sword, execution of the Marine obstacle course, execution of the confidence course, and the execution of a physical fitness test. Mastery for the graded event requires a score of 80%.
It is highly encouraged that officers attending the S.C.C. prepare themselves to complete the obstacle and confidence courses prior to commencing the course. The rigors of recruit training are extremely physical and it is highly recommended that officers checking in possess a high level of physical fitness.
Each class is scheduled on the projected inflow of officers to the Recruit Training Regiment. Therefore it is not uncommon for a course to begin the same week an officer checks aboard Parris Island. It is imperative that all billeting, TMO, and personal issues be taken care of before or after the course. There will not be time during the course to take care of such items.
Each officer will be expected to have ready for use:
- Mameluke Sword with all rigging and duty belt
- All service uniforms to include barracks and garrison covers
- At least two sets of combat utilities (desert and woodland digitals)
- All uniforms tailored to ensure proper fit and military appearance
