Becoming a drill instructor is an extraordinary opportunity to directly impact the future of the United States Marine Corps. The Marine Corps prides itself on two basic principles: “Making Marines and Winning Battles”. The Marine drill instructor provides an intense and demanding example of our fundamental values for new Marines to emulate. The drill instructor is the symbol of transformation for the young man and woman seeking direction and change. The ability to develop an instant willing obedience to all orders in a civilian is not a simple task and you will truly be challenged every minute of every training day. The basic Marine must have the ability to perform assigned tasks, maintain physical conditioning standards, and display our values and ethics, both on and off the battlefield, while demonstrating an unwavering selfless devotion to Country and Corps. The drill instructor is the mentor and leader who is entrusted to lead these individuals through this transformation.

Drill Instructor School is designed to challenge Marines at every aspect of leadership. This is accomplished by rigorous developmental programs in our core values, physical conditioning, close order drill, Marine Corps common skills and detailed instruction on the Recruit Training Order. Upon graduation, you must demonstrate a superior level of physical prowess, academic excellence, and confidence performing and instructing close order drill. Success at Drill Instructor School is based on the following: INTENSITY, HARD WORK, TIME MANAGEMENT, DISCIPLINE, and HONOR.

You have taken the first step toward future success by accepting the challenge of becoming a Marine Corps drill instructor. The staff of Drill Instructor School looks forward to leading you through your development while at this demanding school. I encourage you to view these website links and review the command screening checklist with your sergeant major / first sergeant to ensure that you meet all of the prerequisites. (Annual training and completed physicals) Do not let a failure to prepare come between you and your future success.
