The Sergeant Major of the Third Recruit Training Battalion is Sergeant Major John D. Logan.

Sergeant Major Logan was born in Abington, PA and grew up in the suburban Philadelphia town of Warminster.  He enlisted in the delayed entry program in February 1988, and graduated from recruit training at MCRD Parris Island, SC in June 1988.  Following recruit training, Private First Class Logan reported to Personnel Administration School, Camp Johnson, NC, graduating as an administrative clerk.

Lance Corporal Logan then reported to Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 451, MCAS Beaufort, SC in October, 1988 where he served at different times as correspondence clerk, CMCC clerk, and training NCO.  He deployed to the Mediterranean Sea for the final cruise of the aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea in 1989, and to Bahrain in support of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in 1990-91, during which time, he was meritoriously promoted to corporal.

In July 1991, Corporal Logan reported to Headquarters Battalion, Headquarters U.S. Marine Corps for service initially in the Administration and Resource Management Division, later in the Office of the Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps, and eventually as a plank owner of the newly formed Office of the Director Marine Corps Staff.  He graduated as the honor graduate of the Sergeants Course at MCB Quantico, VA in September 1994.

He reported to Drill Instructor School, MCRD, Parris Island, SC in January 1995 before reporting for duty with Company A, 1st Recruit Training Battalion for service as a Drill Instructor and Senior Drill Instructor.  He also served six months of this tour with Support Battalion, as a Marine Combat Instructor of Water Survival at the recruit training pool.  

Sergeant Logan returned to Headquarters Marine Corps in July 1997 for duty as administrative assistant to the 13th Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps where he remained until Sergeant Major Lee’s retirement in July 1999.  During this tour, he was promoted to staff sergeant while attending the Career Course at MCB, Quantico, VA in March 1998, where he graduated as the honor graduate. 

In July 1999, Staff Sergeant Logan reported to Headquarters Company, 4th Marine Regiment, Camp Schwab, Okinawa, where he served as the regimental personnel officer for 15 months before moving to Headquarters, 3d Marine Division, Camp Courtney, Okinawa where he served as the 3d Marine Division Personnel Chief from November 2000 through May 2002.

In June 2001, Staff Sergeant Logan was selected to be the next Marine Corps Representative to the Superintendent of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, Long Island, NY, to whom he reported in May 2002.  He was promoted to gunnery sergeant in October 2002 while attending the Advanced Course, MCB Quantico, VA where he graduated on the distinguished honor roll.

Upon the graduation of the Kings Point Class of 2005 in June 2005, Gunnery Sergeant Logan reported to Personnel Administration School, Camp Johnson, NC for duty as an entry level instructor.  He was selected for promotion to First Sergeant in December of that year.
In March 2006, First Sergeant Logan reported to Company G, 2d Battalion, 2d Marines, Camp Lejeune, NC for duty as Company First Sergeant.  In 2007, he deployed with the 26th MEU aboard USS Bataan to the Persian Gulf in support of the Global War on Terrorism.
In January 2008, First Sergeant Logan reported to 2d Marine Division G-7, Camp Lejeune, NC, for duties as Assistant Sergeant Major to the Division Inspector.

First Sergeant Logan joined Company C, Task Force 1st Battalion, 2d Marines at Camp Habbaniyah, Iraq in September 2008 and completed the final six months of that battalion’s deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Returning to MCRD Parris Island in July 2009, First Sergeant Logan was assigned to Headquarters and Service Battalion.  He was selected for promotion to his current rank while serving as the Company First Sergeant of Headquarters Company.

He reported for duty as the Sergeant Major for 3d Recruit Training Battalion in February 2010.

Sergeant Major Logan's personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (Gold Star in Lieu of 2d Award), the Maritime Service Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (Gold Star in Lieu of 2d Award).
