The commanding officer of the First Recruit Training Battalion is
Lieutenant Colonel David B. Morgan.
LtCol. Morgan was born in October 1963 in Richmond, Indiana. He received a bachelor of arts degree in business administration from Hanover College in 1987.
LtCol. Morgan enlisted in the Marine Corps in November 1987 and went through recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California. Upon completion of the School of Infantry, he was assigned to the Marine Barracks 8th & I for duty. He was accepted into the Enlisted Commissioning Program, graduating in April 1989 from Officer Candidate School.
In April 1990, after completion of The Basic School and the Data Systems Officer Course, he was assigned to the Regional Automated Support Center, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, as the software support officer. In September 1990, he was reassigned as aide de camp to the commanding general of Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. In February 1992, he was transferred to the I Marine Expeditionary Force in Camp Pendleton, also as aide de camp. During this tour, he deployed to Somalia in support of Operation Restore Hope. From February 1994 to December 1996, he worked in the private sector as a regional manager for Automatic Data Processing.
In January 1997, he was assigned to the Officer Assignment Branch, Manpower & Reserve Affairs Department, Headquarters Marine Corps, as the systems support officer. In June 1998, he was reassigned to the Manpower Information Technologies Division where he served as the officer in charge of the Customer Support, Manpower and Reserve Affairs Local Area Network and Data Base Development sections.
In August 2000, he was transferred to the U.S. Third Fleet for assignment as the amphibious communication liaison officer. In December 2002, he assumed the duties as the deputy assistant chief of staff for Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence (C4I).
In July 2003, he was reassigned to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego where he served as the executive officer for both 2nd Recruit Training Battalion and Support Battalion, as well as the director of Drill Instructor School.
In August 2006, he was reassigned to duty as Inspector/Instructor, Communication Company (-), Headquarters Battalion, 4th Marine Division, Cincinnati, Ohio. In July 2008, he was transferred to the III Marine Expeditionary Force in Okinawa, Japan, where he served as the deputy assistant chief of staff of communications (G-6).
In August 2009, he returned to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, where he served as the operations officer and executive Officer for the Recruit Training Regiment.
LtCol. Morgan’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal with silver star in lieu of fifth award and the Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal.
