| The Law Center |
The Office of the Staff Judge Advocate at Parris Island provides legal assistance in areas to include wills; family law (such as marital separation, uncontested adoptions, uncontested parental custody); consumer law; immigration and naturalization; landlord/tenant law; the Service members' Civil Relief Act; and name changes. The office also runs a tax center during tax season to assist in the preparation of federal and state income tax returns. Assistance is provided for active duty service members, family members, and retirees. Marine Corps legal assistance programs provide free professional legal help to active duty service members, retirees, and their dependents. Legal assistance also helps certain survivors of deceased armed forces members. A legal assistance officer is a licensed attorney. Legal assistance attorneys give advice and help prepare legal documents and correspondence. Information discussed with a legal assistance attorney is protected by the attorney-client privilege, which means that client to attorney conversations are confidential. |
Before making a legal assistance appointment, you should do the following:
First, take logical steps to help yourself. If you find yourself in a legal dispute, try to talk to the other party before consulting an attorney. You can then give the attorney both sides of the story. You may find that the other party is reasonable and willing to resolve the matter. In your approach, be tactful and courteous. Many legal problems arise simply because the parties are discourteous and lose their tempers.
Second, when you see your attorney, bring along all available documents, records, and correspondence about your question or problem. The nature of the information you provide will directly affect the quality of advice you receive.
If you need a document notarized, power of attorney, or affidavit of domicile, come in during normal work hours.
Please call the Depot Law Center and make an appointment in order to speak to an attorney. Attorneys will not provide legal advice over the telephone. For appointments, call during normal working hours.
The Law Center is open Monday through Friday from 0730-1130 and 1300-1630. We are located in Building 293 on Samoa Street, down the street from Navy Federal Credit Union and across the street from the Base Gym.

| FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA) |
Each federal agency is responsible for meeting its FOIA responsibilities for its own records. This site is designed to familiarize you with the specific procedures for making a request for records controlled by the U.S. Marine Corps.
The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), 5 United States Code (USC) 552, allows an individual (regardless of nationality), a private organization or company, or a local, state, or foreign government to seek access to Executive Branch agency records, such as those held by the U.S. Marine Corps. All agencies of the U.S. Government are required to disclose records upon receiving a written request, except those records that are protected from disclosure pursuant to nine exemptions and three exclusions. The FOIA applies only to federal agencies and does not create a right of access to records held by Congress, the courts, or by state or local government agencies. Any requests for state or local government records should be directed to the appropriate state or local government agency.
As a component of the Department of the Navy, Secretary of the Navy Instruction 5720.42F, Department of the Navy Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Program (SECNAVINST 5720.42F), governs the Marine Corps FOIA program. SECNAVINST 5720.42F is codified at 32 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 701.
If you require assistance with submitting a request or if you have questions regarding the status of a request, you may contact the Parris
