Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) Policy Statement

Sexual assault is a crime that will not be tolerated within the Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island or the Eastern Recruiting Region. Sexual assault undermines unit cohesion, our core values and the very integrity of our institution. In addition to causing harm to the victim, sexual assault affects fellow Marines, sailors and civilians, friends, and family members. No one should feel safe in an environment where sexual assault is accepted or minimized. Combating sexual assault is the responsibility of every Marine. It is not acceptable to remain silent or be a bystander during an assault. All must have the moral courage to stand against the crime, recognizing it first and foremost as assault. We are charged as members of this profession and workforce to treat each other with dignity and respect. There is nothing about sexual assault – either the act or witnessing the act – that reflects dignity or respect.

Sexual assault has a devastating impact on victims. In the event of sexual assault, it is our duty to create an environment where each victim feels secure in coming forward to report the offense and to seek the medical and psychological treatment needed to deal with this event. The Sexual Assault Response Team assists victims by providing options for reporting, accessing medical treatment, and receiving continued support and care. I expect all Marines to take part in creating a safe environment for reporting. If you or someone you know needs immediate assistance involving sexual assault, please call the 24/7 Sexual Assault Response line at (843) 592-0646.

All Marines, sailors, and civilians must be willing to speak out against sexual assault and to intervene as events arise. Everyone is responsible for assisting a victim in finding proper help and support after a crime has occurred. It is only through our combined efforts that we will be successful in creating an environment free from sexual assault.
