The Sergeant Major of the Weapons and Field Training Battalion is Sergeant Major Michael Lane.

Sergeant Major Lane joined the Marine Corps in April 1982 and went through recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Paris Island, S.C.

After completion of recruit training, he reported to MATSS-902, MATSG-90, Millington, Tenn., to begin training in avionics. In June of 1983, Lance Corporal Lane was transferred to Strike Fighter Squadron 125 (VFA-125), Naval Air Station Lemoore, Calif., where he completed the First Cadre Course “A” school training as an Intermediate Level Avionics Support System Technician (6462) on the F/A-18 aircraft.

Upon completion of training, he was assigned to Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 314, Headquarters and Maintenance Squadron 11, Marine Air Group 11, El Toro, Calif., to work as an “I” Level Avionics Technician.

In June 1984, Corporal Lane received orders to Marine Aviation Training Support Group (MATSG), NAS Cecil Field, Florida. There he stood up the Navy’s first “I” Level Avionics Work Center for the F/A-18 aircraft. While there he also served as a Collateral Duty Inspector (CDI) and a member of the Base Crisis Response Team.

In June 1988 Sergeant Lane Reported to VMFA-312, H&MS-31, MAG-31, Marine Corps Air Station, Beaufort, S.C. During his time there H&MS-31 was redesignated as Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron-31 (MALS-31). While there he served as a crew leader and CDI and participated in deployments to Iwakuni, Japan, and the Republic of the Philippines.

Sergeant Lane was ordered to MALS-42, MAG-42, Detachment A, Cecil Field, Florida, in July 1991 for independent duty. During his time there he served as an assistant noncommissioned officer in charge and CDI.

In January of 1994, Sergeant Lane Reported to MCRD, Parris Island for drill instructor duty with Co. K, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion. During this time he served as a drill instructor, senior drill instructor, and company gunnery sergeant. Additionally, he was assigned to close combat where he became a close combat instructor and served as the noncommissioned officer in charge.

In June of 1996, Staff Sergeant Lane reported back to MALS-31, MAG-31, Beaufort, S.C. During this time he served as a staff noncommissioned officer in charge and detachment SNCOIC. While deployed to Japan, he led a detachment of Marines to Guam in support of Operation Noble Eagle with the 31st MEU. He also led a detachment of Marines with MALS-31, MAG-31 (FWD) in Taszar, Hungary, in support of Operations Allied Force and Joint Guardian.

In June 2002, First Sergeant Lane reported to the 25th Marine Regiment Inspector-Instructor Staff, Worcester, Mass., for duty as the Headquarters Co. first sergeant. During this time he deployed to Norway with Marine Air Ground Task Force-25 for Exercise Battle Griffin. Additionally, he deployed to Iraq where he served as an advisor on a Military Transition Team (MiTT) to the 3d Battalion, 1st BDE, 1st Division Iraqi Intervention Force in support of OIF 4-06/5-07.

In June 2006, Sergeant Major Lane reported to 2d Marine Division where he assumed duties as the battalion sergeant major, 2d Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment. During his time with 2d Bn., 6th Marine Regiment, Sergeant Major Lane deployed to Al Fallujah, Iraq, in support of OIF 6-08 and then as the Battalion Landing Team 2/6 Sergeant Major with the 26th MEU.

Sergeant Major Lane reported to Weapons and Field Training Battalion, Parris Island, S.C., for duty in June 2009.

Sergeant Major Lane’s personal decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with 1 gold star, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with 2 gold stars and the Combat Action Ribbon.
